SAFE’s shelter provides safe housing and a comprehensive program of support and advocacy to victims fleeing abuse. The goal of the shelter is to empower residents to regain their self-sufficiency and live safe and productive lives. During their stay at the shelter, residents may participate in case management, counseling, support groups, and receive referrals for additional community support. With the support of SAFE staff, residents explore options and determine what goals they want to set for themselves while they are in the shelter and beyond. Most residents choose to live independently from their abusers, so staff work with them to prepare to make the transition. Staff work with residents to help access resources for housing, child care, transportation, jobs, job training, long-term counseling, etc.

 

As residents leave the shelter, they are encouraged to continue to participate in support groups to ensure success in their transition to their new lives. SAFE staff encourage clients to remain in contact, call, or visit for continued support or to talk about problems and successes.
